Tees Walk 2008

Where?
From Dufton to the South Gare

When?
Sunday 11—Sunday 18 May 2008

Why?
To raise money for all the organisations which serve and support  seafarers on the river Tees. To provide a home from home for them, for rest and recreation, with excellent facilities and reliable transport

The walk will be divided into eight daily stages with a rendezvous point in central Middlesbrough and transport to and from the beginning and end of each day's walk.
You can raise sponsorship to support the seafarers visiting the Tees by just walking a mile, one stage or gathering a team to complete any or all of the walk stages.

Well, we’re off again – same route, higher aspirations. Last year we raised over £4000 for seafarers’ charities here on the Tees, this year we want to make it £10,000.

So we are asking you to come and walk with us.

We are going a bit earlier this year in the hope that the weather is a bit drier and the vegetation a bit lower, following last year’s route.

This year, however, we are aiming to have £500 per day pledged in advance from your group or company, so that, with Gift Aid, we can meet our target. Come for a day or longer: 20 people per day would be a good crowd.

Thanks to PD Teesport, we have our website again. Click on to www.pdports.co.uk and follow the link to the Tees Walk 2008. There you will find the routes and daily information, together with a sponsorship form and photos from 2007.

Better still, talk to one of us for more information:

Mission to Seafarers
South Tees

Colin Worswick, Chaplain, works about some of the work on the Tees

“A Filipino seafarer recently went home after three-month convalescence in Middlesbrough. Daniel was badly injured onboard his ship, and had to be airlifted to hospital for urgent medical treatment to his leg and head. After successful surgery, Daniel was befriended by the local branch of The Mission to Seafarers. Most nights, Daniel would visit the centre to telephone home and chat with staff and volunteers.

But it’s not just in times of crisis that The Mission to Seafarers launches into action.

For over 150 years, seafarers have come to recognise the flying angel logo as a safe haven of friendship and support. The Mission to Seafarers at Teesport cares for the practical and spiritual welfare of men and women seafarers of all nationalities and faiths.

Our chaplain visit seafarers on their ships offering help and assistance, we operate a seafarers’ centre where crew members can make the most of their limited time ashore by relaxing in friendly surroundings, replenishing essential items and, most importantly, keep in touch with their distant loved ones through telephone and email facilities. The chaplain also offers support to all port workers, from security men to harbour policemen; dock workers to ladies in the port canteen.

Our presence in this port signifies our commitment to supporting seafarers in their work and recognises the important contribution they make in keeping the world’s economies moving. Many seafarers come from the poorest, most disadvantaged parts of the world and through our work, have learnt to trust The Mission to Seafarers as the strong shoulder of support they need”.
